How to recognise bullying

Bullying is when someone:

  • Hurts another person on purpose
  • Does it more than once
  • One person/persons has more power
  • Feels scared or unable to stop it.
Identify

Types of bullying

There are different types of bullying which can be categorised as:

Type of bullying What it looks like
Physical Hitting, pushing
Verbal Name-calling, teasing
Emotional Leaving someone out on purpose
Online Hurtful messages or posts

What is not considered bullying?

Not all unkind behaviour is bullying. Below are some examples of behaviours that are not usually considered as bullying.

  • An argument or disagreement
  • A falling out between friends
  • Accidental hurt (not done on purpose)
  • Children saying something unkind once
  • Playing or joking where no one is trying to hurt the other.

Important!

Even if these behaviours are not a form of bullying, it can still upset a child or require some support from the school.

We take all concerns seriously and will help children:

  • Talk things through
  • Solve problems
  • Build positive friendships.

  • Support will continue until they feel safe.

If your child has bullied others:

  • Staff will explain why the behaviour is wrong
  • Help them understand others’ feelings
  • Give clear consequences – linked to the behaviours shown and our behaviour policy
