Amanda’s journey at Sycamore Academy began in 1995 when she started volunteering after her son joined the nursery, helping on school trips and supporting children with reading. Having previously worked in retail, she trained at the academy before taking on her first teaching assistant role, providing English Language Support intervention and working with Year 1 pupils.
Over the years, Amanda took on a variety of roles across the academy, but it was her passion for phonics and reading that became the hallmark of her career, helping countless pupils develop a lifelong love of learning.
Throughout her time at Sycamore Academy, Amanda has created countless memories with pupils and colleagues. Highlights include taking the entire infant school to Skegness by train, Year 2 residential visits to Brackenhurst and Robin Hood Scout Camp, and staff performances at ‘Sycamore’s Got Talent’. She also fondly remembers a whole-school picnic at Chatsworth House organised to mark a former Headteacher’s retirement.
Amanda has seen generations of families pass through the academy, with some former pupils now bringing their own children to the school.
To mark Amanda’s retirement, pupils and staff came together at the end of the school year for a special whole-school assembly to celebrate her 30 years of service. The event gave the academy community an opportunity to thank her for her dedication and the lasting impact she has made.
“My favourite part of working at Sycamore has always been the amazing, dedicated staff who have inspired me over the years. When we say Sycamore is a family, it truly is.
“It’s been a privilege to watch the children thrive and blossom. I’ve seen children grow from Nursery into adulthood, and I’ve even seen some of them bring their own children to Sycamore. I started my career here and I’m ending it at the school I love. I really wouldn’t have wanted to work anywhere else.”
